Scripps Television stations throughout the nation including Tampa Bay’s ABC Action News has teamed with the American Red Cross to launch a fund drive for the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti called "Help for Haiti".
“When you witness the news stories of sorrow and misery, you can only ask, ‘How can we help?’” said Brian Lawlor, senior vice president of the Scripps television division. “Scripps TV stations will reach out to their local communities and let them know how they can help the millions of survivors affected by this disaster.”
Funds raised will support the areas that the American Red Cross has identified as Haitians’ greatest needs: food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.
Coverage will begin at noon on Tuesday, January 19th and will conclude with a telethon from 7 to 8 p.m.
All of the money raised during the event will go to American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
In addition, Red Cross volunteers will be at four local Westfield malls on Tuesday, January 19th from noon until 8:00 p.m. collecting monetary donations for the relief efforts. Participating Westfield malls include Citrus Park, Countryside, Sarasota Square and Westfield Brandon malls.
“The support of ABC Action News and its staff has been a shining example of the generosity of our community,” said Linda Carbone, CEO of the American Red Cross Tampa Bay Chapter.
A recent telethon conducted by ABC Action News resulted in raising $18,870 in two and one half hours.
You can help the victims of countless crises, like the recent earthquake in Haiti, around the world each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need. The American Red Cross honors donor intent. If you wish to designate your donation to a specific disaster, please do so at the time of your donation by mailing your donation with the designation to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 or to your local American Red Cross chapter. Donations to the International Response Fund can be made by phone at 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) or online at www.redcross.org
